Valentines Day

During William and Kate"s royal wedding, pastor Richard Chartes boldly declared: "as the reality of God has faded from so many lives in the West, there has been a corresponding inflation of expectations that personal [relationships] alone will supply meaning and happiness in life." As Valentine's Day approaches, we celebrate the joy of human love, but also recognize its limits.

As image-bearers ...
of a triune God, we are made to love others and to be loved by them. February 14 can help us remember this; those closest to us can also be those most easily taken for granted. But in contrast to many Hollywood plot lines, our ultimate fulfillment will not be found in any one human relationship. That's simply too great a burden to place on anyone! While we celebrate the unspeakable gift of a spouse, dating relationship or close friend, we can also let them off the hook for having to satisfy our deepest needs.

This Valentine's Day, we also pause to celebrate God's love - the unconditional, grace-saturated love that receives us before we've ever 'accomplished' anything and welcomes us home no matter where we've been.
